Welcome to American Studies
For over 40 years, American Studies with its distinguished faculty has promoted scholarship on cultures and politics of the United States. We emphasize the interdisciplinary study of literature, history, culture, and social sciences. Our faculty are dedicated teachers who research and offer courses in law and politics; race and ethnicity; gender and sexuality; popular culture and folklore; technology and economy. We offer the minor in Race and Ethnic Studies and sponsor the Asian/Asian American Studies Undergraduate Certificate and Initiative.
The extensive and wide-ranging publications of our diverse faculty illustrate the richness of the field. From Native wampum belts to rock ‘n’ roll, from urban fashion to 9/11 memorials, American Studies examines a range of materials to emphasize integrated approaches to the study of American history and culture.
Our faculty is dedicated to helping students learn to write well, to speak articulately, and to think analytically and creatively. These are skills necessary for success in any field. We are a small department, and we give students a great deal of individual attention. We try to maintain a small-college atmosphere within our enormous state university.
