Bio:
Louise Duus
came to the
department in
1974 from Lafayette
College, where
she had taught
since 1970. Prior
to that, she
had taught
at SUNY Buffalo
and at Philander
Smith, a predominantly
black Methodist
college in
Little Rock,
Arkansas. The
Arkansas experience
taught her
to be cautious
in generalizing
about American
culture.
The experience
of joining
the faculty of
Lafayette College,
a previously
all male school,
the first year
it went coed
raised her
consciousness
about women's
rights.
Her academic
degrees are
from Oberlin,
the University
of Michigan,
and the University
of Minnesota.
She has published
articles on
late nineteenth
century American
fiction, and
has done research
on women and
utopianism
in the nineteenth
century. Her
current interests
lie in the
area of popular
culture, particularly
best-selling
fiction.
Professor Duus
retired as
Associate
Dean of Douglass
College in
1994 and
is now a PTL
in American Studies.
