"The Legacy of Kate Bornstein: Film Presentation of Kate Bornstein is a Queer & Pleasant Dancer, Q&A and Studnet Panel"

Thursday, November 20, 2014, 07:30pm

Cited by IndieWire as one of the must-fee films
of the 2014 festival circuit, Sam Feder's Kate Bornstein is a Queer
& Pleasant Danger
is the first documentary about the pioneering
transgender author and performer Kate Bornstein. The film sheds new light
on issues of critical importance to American Studies students, such as sexual
subcultures, social movements and survival, aesthetic practice and identity, notions
of queer family and legacy, and trans/gender theory and politics. For more on
this portrait of Kate Bornstein, queer hero and gender outlaw,
see http://katebornsteinthemovie.com/.

The post-screening Q & A with award-winning director Sam
Feder will allow students to get a personal look at the art practice of this
important trans director. A student panel reflecting on Kate Bornstein's
significance to their own lives will conclude the evening. The event will be of
particular appeal to American Studies students and will complement the
department's mission to develop sophisticated analyses of culture, power, and
identity that speak directly to students' lives.
