An Evening of Gospel Choirs
Saturday, February 25, 2023
From 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Mount Calvary Missionary Church
150 Throop Avenue
New Brunswick, NJ 08901

Gospel Singers will spotlight Black History Month with a concert of spiritual music at the Mount Calvary Missionary Church, 150 Throop Avenue, New Brunswick at 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023. The Master of Ceremonies will be Apostle Dr. Brenda Lumzy Hicks of that church.

Black Gospel music has been traditionally concerned with the African-American quest for freedom. It has provided both "spiritual and communal uplift," first in the fields, and later in the Black Church; during the 1960s era in the South, it was described as the "soundtrack of the struggle for civil rights," helping create unity and faith for the work.

Legendary gospel group, the Lumzy Sisters of Mississippi, are returning to the event this year. Based in New Brunswick, this group is known to gospel fans around the world. They are known for keeping traditional, hand-clapping, tambourine-shaking gospel music alive. The sisters have remained true to their tried and tested traditional roots.

The Special Guest Keynote Speaker will be Professor Angus Kress Gillespie of Rutgers University. Gillespie founded the Evening of Gospel Choirs back in 1983. Thus, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the program. For many years the event took place at Rutgers.

However, last year this annual, free public concert was transferred from Gillespie to its new director, Elder Anita D. Hicks of Mount Calvary Missionary Church. Gillespie’s talk is entitled “A Brief History of An Evening of Gospel Choirs.” The event continues to be funded by the Folklife Program of the Division of Arts and History of Middlesex County.
