The American Studies Department is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our department's founders, Professor Michael Aaron Rockland. Professor Rockland was a beloved teacher, colleague, and friend, and he inspired generations of Rutgers students through his passion and love for teaching. As he once said, "If I won the lottery, I'd be back in the classroom on Monday."

We extend our deepest condolences to Professor Rockland's family and friends, as well as his many students. The department is planning a tribute to Professor Rockalnd at our Senior Celebration on May 15, 2026, as well as putting together a memorial webpage. If you are a former student of Dr. Rockland's who would like to attend and say a few words at the event or would like to share memories on our memorial page, please contact Professor Sylvia Chan-Malik at This email address is being protected from spambots.
