The aim of this course is to understand how Asians Americans fought against the exclusions that forced them to remain perpetual foreigners and strangers in their own land; how they developed American identities; how they challenged America to fulfill its democratic promise; stood in solidarity with other groups; and enriched America with their own capital, labor, cultures, and creativity. Although Asian Americans suffered victimization, racism, and exploitation, theirs is also a story of resistance, resilience, and transformation. Through lectures, readings, multimedia resources, and class discussions, this course will explore the histories, circumstances, ideas, and intersectional identities that constitute the Asian American experience, past and present.
